LMM Duramax Exhaust FAQ
What is included in the LMM Duramax exhaust collection?
This collection is the high-impact LMM exhaust component lineup, not a complete bolt-on turbo-back system. It covers the three biggest restrictions on a 6.6L LMM, the crushed stock downpipe, the leaking passenger-side up-pipe, and the cast-log exhaust manifolds, plus an LMM EGR delete up-pipe for off-road builds.
You get mandrel downpipes, bolt-on passenger up-pipes, T304 stainless headers, and the EGR delete pipe. Pair them as your goals dictate, from a street-legal tow upgrade to a full off-road build.
Will the LMM downpipe fit my truck, and is it worth it?
Yes. The chrome turbo downpipe fits the 6.6L LMM in 2004.5 to 2010 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD, and the 3in turbo downpipe and up-pipe combo covers the LLY, LBZ, LMM and LML from 2001 to 2016.
The LMM downpipe is absolutely worth it because the factory pipe is the number one crush restriction in the whole exhaust path. Opening it lets the variable-geometry turbo spool sooner, drops exhaust gas temperature under tow, and gets rid of the wide-open-throttle screech.
On a stock truck it is a direct-fit swap that keeps the catalytic converter and DPF in place.
Does this collection include a 4 inch or 5 inch turbo-back, cat-back, or dual exhaust system?
No. EGR Performance stocks these individual LMM components rather than a complete 4 inch or 5 inch turbo-back, cat-back, or dual exhaust kit.
A true 5 inch turbo-back on an LMM runs past the factory DPF and catalytic converter, which means deleting emissions hardware, and that is off-road only. We carry the downpipe, up-pipe, and manifold headers that make the largest single gains.
If you want a full 4 inch or 5 inch, cat-back, or dual system, source that separately and pair it with these components. Confirm your year and cab configuration before ordering any full system.
Can I straight pipe my LMM Duramax, and what is an LMM race pipe?
Straight-piping an LMM means removing the catalytic converter, the DPF, and the muffler so exhaust flows straight through, and an LMM race pipe is the delete section that replaces the DPF and cat.
Neither a straight-pipe kit nor a race pipe is in this collection. Straight-piping a 2007.5 to 2010 LMM removes the DPF that came on the truck, which is an emissions delete for competition and closed-course off-road use only.
The downpipes and up-pipes here are the performance foundation you would build around, not a ready-made straight pipe.
Will the LB7 up-pipe fit my LMM Duramax?
Yes. The passenger-side up-pipe is a shared part across the LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM and LML from 2001 to 2016, so the LB7 up-pipe drops straight onto an LMM.
That is why both the bolt-on passenger up-pipe and the 3in downpipe and up-pipe combo list the full 2001 to 2016 Duramax range. Use fresh crush-donut gaskets on the install so you seal the drive-pressure leak on the first try.
How do I install and replace the LMM passenger-side up-pipe?
Cycle the truck so the exhaust is cold, pull the passenger front wheel and inner fender liner for access, and support the turbo before loosening the up-pipe.
Unbolt the old pipe, clean the turbo and manifold mating surfaces, and seat the new bellowed bolt-on pipe with fresh crush-donut gaskets torqued to spec. The bellowed flex section absorbs movement so the gaskets live longer than the baked-out factory ones.
If you are also fitting the EGR delete up-pipe, the passenger pipe routes to the delete block-off, so plan that job together.
Do exhaust manifold headers fit the LMM, and do I need them?
Yes. The T304 stainless exhaust manifold headers fit the 6.6L Duramax LB7 through LML from 2001 to 2016, including the LMM.
You need them when you want each cylinder pulse to flow on its own instead of fighting into a shared cast log, which improves scavenging, lowers exhaust gas temperature, and pulls heat away from the cylinder head.
They are a strong upgrade for tuned or worked LMM trucks that tow heavy or run hot, and they pair naturally with a mandrel downpipe and a sealed up-pipe.
What is the best exhaust for an LMM Duramax?
The best exhaust approach on an LMM is to fix the three factory restrictions first, the downpipe, the passenger up-pipe, and the manifolds, before spending on a full system.
On a stock truck a mandrel downpipe with a sealed up-pipe and tubular headers gives you the largest EGT and spool gains while staying street-legal. For an off-road competition build you add the EGR delete up-pipe and source the larger delete piping separately.
We do not recommend skipping the downpipe for a bigger tailpipe, the downpipe is where the LMM actually chokes.
What is the difference between the EGR delete up-pipe and the standard passenger up-pipe?
The standard bolt-on passenger up-pipe is a direct-fit replacement that seals the leak while keeping the EGR system working exactly as the factory intended.
The LMM EGR delete up-pipe replaces the passenger pipe with a version that blocks the EGR feed path, cutting the exhaust gas recirculated back into the intake. That lowers intake soot and exhaust gas temperature, but it is an emissions delete, so it is for competition and closed-course off-road use only.
If you tow on the street, run the standard pipe and keep the EGR.
Are these LMM Duramax exhaust parts street legal, and do they ship free?
The mandrel downpipes, the bolt-on passenger up-pipes, and the tubular exhaust manifold headers are 50-state street-legal direct-fit replacements that remove or bypass no emissions device, as long as the factory catalytic converter and DPF stay in place.
The LMM EGR delete up-pipe is an emissions delete and is sold for competition and closed-course off-road use only, so check your state and local emissions laws before fitting it.
