What is a Downpipe Exhaust?
A downpipe exhaust, often referred to as a down pipe or down pipes, is a crucial component in turbocharged diesel engines like those in Ford Powerstroke and GM Duramax trucks.
It connects the turbocharger to the rest of the exhaust system, directing exhaust gases away efficiently.
Upgrading to a performance downpipe, such as a down pipe Duramax or 6.0/6.7 Powerstroke downpipe, removes restrictions from factory setups, allowing for better flow and enhanced engine performance.
Questions like "what is a turbo downpipe" or "what's a down pipe" often arise—simply put, it's the pipe that handles hot exhaust gases post-turbo, and upgrading it can transform your truck's power output.
How Does a Downpipe Exhaust Work?
Downpipe exhausts work by reducing backpressure and optimizing exhaust flow. In a stock system, restrictions from catalytic converters or narrow piping hinder efficiency.
A high-performance downpipe replacement, like an L5P downpipe or LML downpipe, features larger diameters (e.g., 4 4-inch downpipe 6.0 Powerstroke or 5 downpipe back exhaust 6.7 Powerstroke) and smoother bends to expel gases faster.
This leads to quicker turbo spool-up, addressing "what does a downpipe do" by improving throttle response and reducing turbo lag.
For Duramax owners, a downpipe for LBZ Duramax or LMM downpipe can significantly enhance combustion efficiency, while Powerstroke users benefit from lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs).
Types of Downpipe Exhausts: Catted vs. Catless
Downpipes come in two main types: catted and catless.
Catted versions retain a catalytic converter for emissions compliance, ideal for street-legal setups.
Catless downpipes, often used in off-road or racing applications, eliminate the converter for maximum flow—think LBZ downpipe, LLY downpipe, or LB7 downpipe for unrestricted performance.
At EGR Performance, our downpipes are built with durable stainless steel, ensuring longevity.
Note: Catless options may require a downpipe tune or downpipe tuning to optimize ECU settings, and we recommend checking local laws, as they might not be street-legal everywhere.
Benefits of Upgrading Your Downpipe Exhaust
Upgrading your downpipe and exhaust brings multiple advantages. Expect increased horsepower—common queries like "how much horsepower does a downpipe add" yield gains of 20-50 HP, depending on the setup.
It improves turbo response, reduces EGTs, and enhances exhaust sound for a deeper tone. Fuel efficiency can boost under load, extending engine and turbo life.
For Powerstroke or Duramax, benefits include better towing and quicker acceleration. Our EGR Performance downpipes also lower maintenance costs long-term, offering high value with superior materials that outperform competitors.
Installation Guide for Downpipe Exhausts
L5P downpipe install or 6.7 Powerstroke downpipe removal is straightforward with basic tools. Start by lifting your truck, disconnecting the stock downpipe, and bolting in the new one—typically 1-2 hours for DIYers.
Professional installation is recommended for best results; we suggest a downpipe and tune combo to avoid codes. EGR Performance kits include mounting hardware for hassle-free fitment.
Wondering, "Do you need a tune for a downpipe"? Yes, for optimal gains. Enjoy free shipping on orders, and our 1-year warranty covers any issues.
How to Choose the Right Downpipe Exhaust for Your Vehicle
Factors like "how much is a downpipe" vary by model, but focus on compatibility, material, and features. Compare the up pipe vs the downpipe—downpipes handle post-turbo flow.
At EGR Performance, our experts help select based on your needs, whether EGR performance exhaust or delete kits. We prioritize quality with rigorous testing, outlasting cheaper options.
The affordable price and high value ensure you get premium performance without overpaying.
Compatibility with Vehicle Makes and Models
Our downpipe collection fits a wide range: Duramax 6.6L (LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, L5P) from 2001+, including downpipe Duramax specifics.
For Powerstroke, we cover 6.0L, 6.4L, 6.7L in F-Series (2003-2024), like 2005 6.0 Powerstroke downpipe or 6.0 Powerstroke 4-inch downpipe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between an up-pipe and a down-pipe?
A: An up-pipe connects the exhaust manifold to the turbocharger, while a down-pipe connects the turbocharger to the rest of the exhaust system.
Q: Will a downpipe make my car louder?
A: Yes, a downpipe can increase exhaust volume by allowing more airflow, which may result in a louder exhaust note.
Q: Does installing an aftermarket downpipe void the warranty?
A: Installing an aftermarket downpipe may void your warranty, particularly if it affects emissions systems or engine components.
Q: Are downpipes legal in all states/countries?
A: No, downpipes, especially those that remove catalytic converters or modify emissions systems, may not be legal in some states or countries due to environmental regulations.
Q: How long does a downpipe typically last?
A: A downpipe can last anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the material and how well it’s maintained.
Q: Will installing a downpipe trigger check engine lights?
A: Yes, installing a downpipe that removes or alters emissions components may trigger the check engine light due to sensor readings being outside normal ranges.

So far so good
My GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 has 180k miles and has been making a rough roaring noise when going down the interstate while in 6th gear over drive. Rpm gauge jumps when the noise starts / stops. Combined gas mileage is about 16 mpg. After Installing the EGR AFM device the engine stays in V8 mode all the time and the engine does not make the rough roaring noise at any speed. Gas mileage has increased to around 17 to 17.5 average mpg per tank. I am very pleased.
I have 183,290 miles on my 2014 GMC Sierra RCSB SLE. I have not had any issues with AFM. The only thing I have had to do is change my front upper A arms. No engine or tranny issues. I retired last year and don’t drive as much so I decided to deactivate running in V4. It fixed any hesitation that I had with the V4/V8 transition and is more enjoyable to drive. Glad I got it.
Works great. No more horrible shifting sounds. Runs very smooth now.
truck runs great you guys are on the ball saved my motor
AFM Disabler for GM V6 & V8 Engines (2005-2020) 5.3 Chevy Silverado
It works great . Also check engine light went out . Very cool
Update, I own a 92 Bronco 5.8 with 3" Lift, 35's 4:10 gears with EOD transmission
Average 10MPG. Just set up new Headers with Block off kit. Now averaging 11.8MPG, no lean issues at cruising speed with full throttle response. If you are going to ERG Headers, I suggest two items, Proform self-locking header bolts #66756 and Fel- pro Header gaskets. Far superior. Expect check Engine light 332 indicates EGR Off.
