The factory downpipe on a 6.6L Duramax is the single tightest restriction in the whole exhaust path, and we have pulled enough of them to know it. GM crushes and ovalizes that pipe to clear the firewall and crossmember on the assembly line, so the exhaust gas leaving your turbo gets funneled through a slot instead of a tube. Our Duramax downpipes replace that pinch with full 3 inch, 3.5 inch, and 4 inch mandrel-bent T304 stainless tubing that holds its round cross-section through every bend.
Every pipe is built from corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel with precision TIG welds at the flanges, CNC-machined turbo outlet flanges for a dead-on bolt-up, and heavy-duty stainless band clamps instead of the factory slip-joint donut that leaks and blows soot. The mandrel bends keep flow velocity high, the 304 stainless shrugs off the 1,200 degree heat pouring out of the turbo, and the wall thickness is set so the pipe will not ring or resonate under load.

Shops call us about downpipes for two reasons, and both come from the same place. The first is a truck running hot on the pyrometer when it is hooked to a 14,000 pound gooseneck, where the crushed stock pipe stacks backpressure on the turbo and the EGTs just climb. The second is a truck with lazy, laggy spool-up that falls on its face off the line.
Open up that downpipe and the turbo exhales. Drive pressure drops, the charger lights sooner, throttle response picks up, and EGTs come down and recover faster when you back out of it. On the L5P in particular, where the factory downpipe is the worst bottleneck GM has shipped in years, the change in response is the most noticeable.
