LML Duramax Exhaust

6.6L Duramax LML Exhaust Pipes, Downpipes and Up-Pipes

Built From T304 Stainless Steel to Handle 1,400-Degree EGTs

This is the LML Duramax exhaust lineup we bolt onto 2011 to 2016 Chevy and GMC heavy-duty trucks in our shop. Every pipe in this collection is mandrel-bent from T304 stainless steel or heavy-gauge aluminized steel, then finished with precision TIG welds so the flow path stays smooth from the turbo discharge all the way out the tailpipe.
We do not cut wall thickness, because a thin pipe on a tuned LML will crack at the bellows within a single season of heavy towing.

The downpipes, up-pipes, DPF delete pipes and race pipes here use OEM-style flanges and high-temperature graphite and Viton gaskets, so they index into the factory V-band and donut seats without grinding or prying.
That is what separates a pipe that bolts in clean from one you fight all afternoon.

Fixing the Failure-Prone Factory Up-Pipe Under Heavy Tow Loads

The stock LML exhaust chokes the turbo the moment you stack a tune, a heavy gooseneck, or a long grade on top of it. The factory passenger-side up-pipe runs a restrictive bellows that cracks and leaks exhaust gas, the downpipe necks down tight against the firewall, and the DPF and CAT stack so much backpressure that exhaust gas temperature climbs fast and fuel economy slides.
Swapping in a free-flowing 3-inch or 4-inch downpipe alongside a reinforced up-pipe drops EGT, lets the variable-geometry turbo spool cleaner, and clears the soot out of the intake tract.

For deleted trucks the downpipe-back and DPF delete pipes open the system up completely for track and sled-pull duty.
You keep the flow, lose the restriction, and the engine stops pumping against its own exhaust.

Why Does Your LML Duramax Need an Exhaust Upgrade?

Soot and Carbon Packing in the DPF and CAT Stack

On a tuned or hard-working LML, the diesel particulate filter and catalytic converter pack full of soot and ash long before the regeneration cycle can burn it off. That packed restriction chokes exhaust flow, drives exhaust gas temperature through the roof under load, and forces the turbo to work against constant backpressure.
The result is sluggish spool, climbing EGT on long grades, and fuel mileage that drops every month the filter gets tighter.

Thermal Fatigue Cracking the Factory Up-Pipe Bellows

The factory passenger-side up-pipe runs a thin convoluted bellows built for stock heat, not for the 1,300-plus degree EGT a tuned LML pushes through it. Heat cycling fatigues the bellows until it splits, leaking exhaust gas across the firewall and robbing the variable-geometry turbo of drive pressure.
A cracked up-pipe also throws off boost response and can scorch nearby wiring and the downpipe boot if it is left leaking.

Restrictive Downpipe Choking the Turbo Discharge

The stock downpipe necks down hard right off the turbo and kinks against the firewall, so the turbo has to push exhaust through a bottleneck every time you load the engine. That restriction shows up as high EGT, laggy boost, and a hot engine bay on tow days.
Opening that first section of pipe with a mandrel 3-inch or 4-inch downpipe is the single biggest flow fix you can make ahead of the rest of the system.

What Can an LML Exhaust Upgrade Solve?

Lower EGT and Cleaner Turbo Spool

A mandrel-bent downpipe paired with a reinforced up-pipe clears the two tightest restrictions in the LML exhaust path. Exhaust gas exits the turbo faster, the variable-geometry turbo spools cleaner, and exhaust gas temperature drops under sustained load, which is what matters when you are towing heavy through the mountains.
That is the difference between a truck that runs cool all day and one that backs out at the top of the grade.

Reduced Backpressure on Deleted Trucks

For competition and closed-course builds, the downpipe-back DPF delete pipes and race pipes remove the packed filter and catalytic converter entirely. Less restriction means the engine stops pumping against its own exhaust, freeing up torque at higher RPM and dropping underhood heat.
These pipes are built for trucks that never see emissions testing, not for a street-driven commuter.

Holding Together Under Repeated Heat Cycles

T304 stainless construction with full TIG welds and high-temperature gaskets holds up to the thermal cycling that splits factory pipes. Reinforced bellows on the up-pipes absorb movement without cracking, so the exhaust stays sealed season after season of towing and track passes.
You install it once, torque the V-band, and stop worrying about the next leak.

What does an LML Duramax exhaust upgrade include?

An LML exhaust upgrade covers everything from the turbo discharge to the tailpipe on a 2011 to 2016 Chevy or GMC heavy-duty truck. That starts with a mandrel 3-inch or 4-inch downpipe right off the turbo, then a reinforced passenger-side and driver-side up-pipe feeding the turbo.
From there it extends into DPF delete pipes, race pipes, and downpipe-back systems that open the rear of the exhaust up.
Together those pieces clear the factory restrictions that choke flow, raise exhaust gas temperature, and kill fuel mileage under load.

Will a 4 inch or 5 inch exhaust give my LML Duramax more horsepower?

The honest answer is that the jump from a 4-inch to a 5-inch system adds almost no measurable horsepower or EGT drop on a Duramax. The real gains come from replacing the restrictive stock pipe, not from the extra inch of diameter.
Most owners pick the 5-inch for the deeper exhaust note and louder turbo whistle, and the 4-inch when they want crisper sound with less weight.
The horsepower and EGT improvement shows up when you pair the exhaust with a proper tune, not from going one size bigger.

Do I need new gaskets when installing an LML downpipe or up-pipe?

Yes, always fit new gaskets on every up-pipe, downpipe, and block-off connection during the install. The factory graphite and donut gaskets crush and harden after years of heat cycling, so reusing them almost guarantees an exhaust leak.
This is the single most common cause of a popping sound or a boost drop right after a downpipe or up-pipe swap.
Our passenger-side up-pipe ships with fresh high-temperature gaskets for exactly this reason.

Why is the factory LML up-pipe so failure-prone?

The stock passenger-side up-pipe uses a thin convoluted bellows engineered for stock heat output, not for the higher exhaust gas temperature a tuned or heavily worked LML runs. Repeated heat cycling fatigues that bellows until it splits along the convolutions.
Once it cracks it leaks exhaust gas across the firewall, steals drive pressure from the variable-geometry turbo, and slows spool response.
Upgrading to a reinforced bellows up-pipe during an EGR delete is the standard fix shops run on these trucks.

Will a 5 inch straight pipe cause cab drone on my 2015-2016 LML?

A 5-inch straight pipe on a deleted LML will absolutely produce noticeable cab drone, usually right in the 1,800 to 2,000 RPM cruising band. That is the most common complaint owners have after a full straight-pipe delete.
You can cut the drone two ways, by stepping down to a 4-inch system, or by adding a muffler or resonator like an FTE diesel resonator or a Banks Monster muffler.
Keeping the catalytic converter in place also softens the sound while still opening up flow behind it.

Do I need a delete tune when I install a DPF delete pipe or straight pipe?

Yes, removing the DPF, catalytic converter, or EGR system requires a delete tune to keep the truck running right. Without it the engine controller throws codes, triggers limp modes, and tries to run regeneration cycles on hardware that is no longer there.
The tune also controls fueling so the engine takes advantage of the lower backpressure instead of running dirty.
This is why we list tuner harness plug kits alongside the exhaust delete pipes in this collection.

What is the difference between 2011-2015 and 2015.5-2016 LML exhaust fitment?

The LML split at the 2015.5 model year, and the exhaust layout changed on both ends. The downpipe and turbo outlet geometry is slightly different, and the DPF and catalytic converter configuration differs between the early and late trucks.
That is why the downpipes and the DPF and CAT delete pipes in this collection are listed for either 2011-2015 or 2015.5-2016, not both.
Pulling your build date or checking the emissions sticker before ordering keeps you from fighting a pipe that will not index into the turbo clamp.

Will removing the DPF and EGR damage my 6.6L Duramax LML engine?

On a properly tuned, off-road build, removing the DPF and EGR does not damage the LML. It actually lowers exhaust backpressure, drops exhaust gas temperature under load, and stops the soot the EGR was dumping back into the intake.
The engine runs cooler and cleaner once the restriction and the recirculated soot are gone.
The catch is that these systems only come out on trucks built for competition and closed-course off-road use, which we cover below.

What vehicles do these LML exhaust pipes fit?

Everything in this collection fits the 2011 to 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD and the GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD powered by the 6.6L Duramax LML.
Several of the up-pipes and exhaust manifolds also carry back across the earlier LB7, LLY, LBZ, and LMM 6.6L Duramax engines from 2001 up.
Each product page calls out the exact engine code, cab configuration, and model year range it fits so you can confirm before you order.

Are these LML exhaust and delete parts street legal, and are they covered by warranty?

The DPF delete pipes, race pipes, EGR deletes, and straight-pipe components in this collection are sold for competition and closed-course off-road use only, and removing emissions equipment is not legal for on-road use in many states.
Because fitment can vary between the early 2011-2015 and late 2015.5-2016 LML, confirm your model year and engine code against each listing before you buy.
Every order ships fast and free, is backed by our 1-year warranty against defects, and is covered by our 45-day return policy, with 24/7 live tech support if you get stuck on fitment.
